Digital & AI: The 10 Questions You're Afraid to Ask (But Everyone's Thinking)

Website, Google Ads, social media, AI, Google reviews… Honest answers to the 10 most common digital questions from small business owners in 2026.

We hear these questions every single week

You run a small business. Your day-to-day is about managing clients, invoices, deadlines and the unexpected. Digital? You know it matters. 78% of SMEs say digital brings them real benefits (France Num Barometer 2025). But between the jargon, the sales pitches and the lack of time, you don't know where to start.

And above all, you have questions. Simple, concrete questions that nobody takes the time to answer without trying to sell you something.

At HK COM, a digital agency based in Northern France since 2019 and France Num Activator, we've trained over 250 professionals through hands-on coaching since January 2024. We hear these 10 questions every single week. Today, we answer them honestly — no jargon, no fluff, no hidden sales pitch at every turn.

1. My website isn't bringing in any clients. Is that normal?

Unfortunately, yes. That's the case for 99% of SME websites. Not because they're ugly or poorly made — but because they're not designed to convert visitors into leads. Most are static showcases: nice pages, a few photos, a "Contact" page buried deep in the menu. The visitor arrives, looks around, and leaves without ever reaching out.

The real problem is the lack of a conversion system. A website that generates clients is one that guides the visitor towards a specific action: fill out a form, call, request a quote. That means a hero section that captures attention in 3 seconds (because 90% of visitors never scroll past the first screen), a visible call-to-action, a short form and social proof (reviews, certifications, case studies).

The good news? The fix is often simpler than you'd think. We helped a professional go from 0% to 4% conversion in 3 weeks, simply by adding three elements: mini case studies, a "Free diagnosis" button and a FAQ addressing the main objections. Three tweaks. Zero extra ad spend.

2. Google Ads, Facebook, TikTok… where should I put my money?

This is THE thousand-euro question — literally. And the answer depends entirely on your industry, your target audience and your budget. But there's a simple logic to understand.

Google Ads is intent-based advertising: your future clients type "plumber near me" or "interior designer London", and your ad appears. You're capturing people actively looking for a provider. Cost per click ranges from €0.50 to €6.75 depending on the industry. Meta Ads (Facebook + Instagram) is discovery-based advertising: your ad interrupts the user's scroll. CPC is lower (€0.20 to €1), but the visitor wasn't looking for you — you need eye-catching visuals. LinkedIn is the king of B2B but the most expensive (€1.50 to €4 per click). And TikTok? Powerful for B2C e-commerce targeting 18-35 year olds, but not suited for accountants or plumbers.

Our recommendation for most SMEs: start with Google Ads + Meta retargeting. The proof it works: in a real-world test, we invested €100 on Google Ads. Result: 7 qualified leads and a potential revenue of €85,000.

3. How do I get more Google reviews? And do they actually matter?

Yes, they matter. A lot. 93% of consumers say online reviews directly influence their purchasing decisions (Geolid). And Google itself favours listings with many recent, highly-rated reviews in local search results. If you have 5 reviews from 2023 and your competitor has 80 with a 4.8 rating, guess who appears first.

The most effective method is also the simplest: ask face-to-face, right after a successful job. The client is happy — that's the perfect moment. Send them a text or email with the direct link to your Google review page straight away (you can generate this from your Google Business Profile). Another tip: print a QR code on your business cards, quotes and invoices. And above all, respond to every review — even the positive ones. A simple "Thank you Mrs Smith, glad you're happy with the result" shows you're active and attentive. Listings with photos attract 2 to 3 times more clicks than empty ones.

At HK COM, we practise what we preach: over 100 five-star reviews and counting.

4. I don't have time to post on social media. How does everyone else manage?

You're not alone. 55% of SME owners cite lack of time as the main barrier to their online presence (France Num Barometer 2025). And the good news is that you don't need to post every day for it to work. What matters isn't quantity — it's consistency and relevance.

The most realistic approach: dedicate 1 hour per week to preparing 2-3 posts. Take photos of your work, your products, your team in action. Write a short, authentic caption — no marketing speak needed. Use Meta Business Suite (free) to schedule your posts in advance on Facebook and Instagram. And if even that one hour is too much, delegate. A professional community manager who knows your industry can handle your presence for a manageable budget. It's an investment, not an expense — and it frees your mind to focus on what you do best: your craft.

At HK COM, we offer community management services tailored to SMEs. Because your clients are on social media, even if you don't have time to be.

5. AI sounds great, but what can it actually do for my business?

This is the most common question in 2026. And the answer is straightforward: AI can save you between 2 and 4 hours a week on tasks you're already doing but that eat up your time. We're not talking about science fiction or robots replacing your staff. We're talking about an assistant that drafts your follow-up emails in 30 seconds, automatically answers your clients' frequent questions on your website ("Do you work weekends?"), generates your social media posts from a few keywords, or summarises a meeting in one click.

In 2025, 26% of SMEs were already using AI — double the previous year (France Num Barometer). And 65% of those who adopted it report improved performance. Adoption is accelerating because the tools have become accessible: some are free (HuggingChat, free ChatGPT), others cost less than €25 per month. You don't need to code, hire or break the bank.

At HK COM, we offer a hands-on training programme "Integrate AI and save 10h/week", 100% fundable through your OPCO.

6. How do I appear first on Google when someone searches for my trade in my town?

There are two main routes, and they complement each other perfectly. The first is organic SEO: optimising your website so Google ranks it for free. It's powerful and long-lasting, but expect 6 to 18 months before seeing significant results. The second is Google Ads (PPC): you pay to appear at the top of results immediately, on the keywords your potential clients are searching.

But there's a lever many business owners massively underestimate: your Google Business Profile. It's free, and it's often what appears first in local search results — even before websites. A well-maintained listing with recent photos, client reviews, updated hours and regular posts is your best ally for local visibility.

The winning combination? Optimised Google profile + website that converts + targeted Google Ads campaigns on your most intent-driven keywords. With €100 budget, we generated 7 qualified leads and €85,000 in potential revenue for a client. The method is replicable, regardless of your industry.

7. My Google listing exists but it's been neglected. Is that a problem?

Yes, it's a real problem. And it's far more common than you'd think. An incomplete Google Business Profile with opening hours from 2022 and zero photos sends a negative signal to both your potential clients and Google itself. Even worse: did you know that anyone — including a competitor — can suggest edits to your listing? If you're not monitoring it, someone else might be doing it for you.

The bare minimum to do today, right now: check that your hours, phone number and address are correct. Add recent photos of your business — listings with photos attract 2 to 3 times more clicks than empty ones. Post at least once a month (a promotion, some news, a photo of your latest work). And respond to your client reviews — 93% of consumers check reviews before contacting a business.

Your Google listing is often the very first touchpoint between your business and a future client. If it's been neglected, it's like having your shutters closed on a busy Saturday.

8. Someone left me an unfair negative review. What do I do?

First rule, the most important one: NEVER respond in the heat of the moment. Never. You're angry — that's normal. But an aggressive or defensive response will do more damage than the review itself. All your future clients will read your reply — and they'll judge your professionalism by how you handle criticism, not by the review itself.

Wait 24 hours. Then write a calm, professional and constructive response. Acknowledge the issue without over-apologising ("We're sorry your experience didn't meet your expectations"). Offer a concrete solution ("Please feel free to call us on 09 72 61 30 92 so we can find a solution"). Stay factual — no sarcasm, no snide remarks.

Here's something counter-intuitive: a well-handled negative review can actually boost your credibility. Consumers are suspicious of listings with nothing but five-star reviews — it looks fake. A 4.7 rating with a few mixed reviews that you've responded to gracefully is more credible than a suspiciously perfect 5.0. And if the review is clearly fake or defamatory, you can report it to Google — though removal is never guaranteed.

9. Can I get my digital training funded without paying out of pocket?

Yes. And most business owners have no idea. If you have at least one employee, you're already paying monthly contributions to an OPCO (Skills Operator). This contribution, automatically deducted from your payroll, funds a training budget reserved for your business. If you don't use it before the end of the year, that budget is lost — it gets redistributed to other businesses that made the effort.

OPCO funding can cover 100% of the cost of your training. Not 50%, not 80% — the full amount. And as a bonus, you can even recover part of the salary costs for the hours spent in training. The setup takes about 4 weeks, and the only technical requirement is that the training is delivered by a Qualiopi-certified organisation.

That's exactly what we offer at HK COM, through L'École des Pros, our Qualiopi-certified training organisation. Our hands-on training "Integrate AI and save 10h/week" has already been funded for over 50 businesses, with a 100% success rate on OPCO applications. Not a single euro taken from those businesses' cash flow.

10. How much does a website actually cost in 2026? And a redesign?

This is the question that generates the most confusion — because the range is enormous and everyone has a different opinion. Let's lay it out clearly.

A professional business website for an SME costs between €1,500 and €5,000 depending on complexity (number of pages, custom design vs template, specific features). An e-commerce site starts around €3,000 to €10,000+. A landing page (conversion-optimised capture page) can be done for €500 to €2,000. What drives the price isn't how beautiful the site looks — it's the quality of the conversion strategy behind it.

The real revolution in 2026 is AI. The method we use at HK COM: a strategic questionnaire to define your target audience and goals, a custom prompt that serves as a brief, then AI generates about 80% of the site — structure, content, optimised sections. The remaining 20% is human finishing: your tone of voice, your photos, your case studies, form configuration. Result: a professional website in days instead of months, for a controlled budget.

And be wary of the "€300 website" or the "free website". A website that doesn't convert is the most expensive website there is — because it costs you clients every single day.
